A real Irony: Inculcation of Slumdog Millionaire story in NCERT Text Books

Government’s decision to put SM story in the Hindi course of XII standard NCERT books is really immature on its part. This shows what standards they are going to maintain in their education system. Just because the movie got 8 Oscars, the authorities decided to put it in the curriculum. They don’t have to think whether it will have good impact on the students or not. This illustrates how much efforts and consideration is given by the curriculum planners in our country!

It seems that our education minister is really a great admirer of these masala movies full of filth poverty, prostitution, murder, riots, child abuse, child molestation, begging, corruption, stealing etc. Is the story of rags to riches new for Indians? Or like western people they are also feeling adventure in SM. May be he and his supporters are great followers of the foreign directors! Then, why don’t they try to follow the advanced techniques of these countries in our education system! Instead they are celebrating the act of degradation of their country’s image globally, by an outsider from a developed nation! Would our ministers also like to educate their kids thru these types of poverty selling violent stories? May be they are sending their children abroad for studies!

Psychological analysis

But respected sir, have you taken time to understand that what psychological effect it will have on your apprentice? Whether you have taken the opinion of child psychologists about the consequences of studying stories full of juvenile delinquency by adolescents? The adolescence (14-16 years age) is a period of growth and development of children when most of the time they go through many behavioral & emotional problems which they even hesitate to discuss with their elders. The thoughts, ideas and concepts developed at this period of life greatly influence the individual's future life, playing a major role in character and personality formation. It is the age of stress, when they are very easily inclined towards the evils prevalent in the society. Moreover exposure to violence affects children's views of the world and themselves, their ideas about the meaning and purpose of life, their expectations for future happiness, and their moral development. And it often interferes with developmental tasks children need to accomplish in order to become competent members of society.

What message this new chapter would convey?

Firstly what will be the title of the chapter – ‘Jhopadpatti ka kutta’? And what message will it convey? What the students will learn from Jamal’s story? Doesn’t it suggest that even if your life is full of crime, violence and poverty, at last you would get crores just by a game show! Even if you don’t study, still you can easily give answers to all the questions just by the experiences you have in your life! No matter what IQ level you have, you would be able to recall all the memories to the precise detail to justify your answer. So, you would always be a winner among other intellectuals! What’s the use of continuing the studies? Why to go for higher studies when we can make crores so easily just being a chaiwala? Then why to waste money and time for getting education? Life will automatically teach us how to become a successful man in this world!

Finally the moral students will get from this story is that it’s the destiny ‘only’ which will make someone successful in life. So, just wait and watch. Who knows that one day they would also get worldwide recognition just like Jamal Mallik or Dev Patel? Destiny again in play! But beware, how much success you get in your life, at last you would be called a Jhopadpatti ka kutta’ –a slum dog, only!

My appeal

Adolescence is the age when students actually need special care. The effects of exposure to violence have a negative impact on two key developmental challenges of students, namely, school adaptation and academic success. Much remains to be learned about how violence exposure brings about these effects and how the cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social systems of children are interrelated. Believe it or ask any child counselor.

Honorable ministers please don’t play with the lives of the students! Sir, it’s the duty of you people, the very representatives of our country, to take care of the future generation. Kindly handle it with care!

Others who feel the same about SM

As the film revels in the violence, degradation and horror, it invites you, the Westerner, to enjoy it, too. Will they find it such fun in Mumbai?

I'm disappointed with the movie, it projected India very cruelly. It only shows child abuse, poverty, and cruelty. If you show something good about India, it will never get awards in western world.

I walked out after the scene where the child was blinded, and without wishing to make myself seem particularly virtuous I am horrified that the rest of the viewing public seem able to sit through and applaud this litany of horrors

If those who review it call it a 'feel-good' movie, why not let your children watch it? If it's going to make them feel good then they should see it!

Image of modern India was getting well recognized until this stupid movie started to show up. What the … Indian govt doing? Appreciating and accepting and moreover celebrating!!!

I want to say one more thing which is about NCERT. Every government wants to teach the students its own theory. We should decide it once for all by sitting together and discuss it. We should decide that what is to be taught or what is not to be taught. Text books should not be changed so frequently on the mercy of political baboons. After all we have the history of more than 5,000 years and we all came from that. We have to maintain that rich cultural heritage.
