This is a movie which portrays Indian culture as bankrupt and evil.

Our country has lots of positives & negatives. It’s not too great a thing for an outsider to come in and project our negatives at the world stage and get away with all of us ‘celebrating it’.

Somehow I can’t make myself to the fact of a passer-by on the road stepping it into my home one fine day, learning about troubles in my family & then publishing it in a global magazine next day to mint money (or be with the noble intention of solving my family’s issues). Never done.

I wish they-and the Indian cast members of Slumdog plus the other secular Indians who are applauding them - had the basic honesty to admit two things: First, they really don’t like the idea of India; and second, even if they felt secretly ashamed at selling their motherland as a whore, they couldn’t help resist the lure of the dollars. . But then what can you do but feel helplessly outraged when you examine "Slumdog" in the right perspective and realise it is one of the more innovative assaults on the Idea of India? I only wish we had smarter protectors of India!

Ultimately, do you think Chna or Saudi will allow you to make a similar film there? And will any bootlicking brit dare to attempt one there?

I would say that we should NOT promote/support someone who is portraying us as a Slum Country. This is the least one can expect, leave aside doing something for the country. If you like America or Americans learn from them and see how they respect their country.

Perception differs here... I view this as unjust exploitation... I hope, no family will allow a third person to exploit their problems... if we treat India as our home and our family, the reaction about SD would have been different….

Raju said...

This is a shame and this film should be banned for national integrity....... It’s difficult to explain how infuriated I am, but deep down if you are an Indian ... It really hurts!

RLV said...

where there is a city theres a slum,it would have been better if the director have portrayed the lifes of people in all slums of the world, its just pointing our country as if the whole world is on other side..........it sucks

Before seeing the movie, I thought those who claimed that it portrayed India in a negative light were being ridiculously defensive. Having seen it, I understand where they are coming from.

The real slumdog in the movie is not the main protagonist but India as a whole… The makers and those celebrating this movie’s hard-to-spot brilliance are actually serving up India as the accidental millionaire, which in fact happens to be a slumdog… and like shameless fools we are gloating over its success without realising that it makes a caricature out of India.

Why are Indians so apologetic about being Indians? Why do we support slum tourism..

Desi babu said…

It reflects very dark side of India which should not have been exposed to the global arena...for example a young British boy or girl who has never been to India watches this movie..what's the impact on their mind, they think "THIS IS INDIA"...which is not at all true....the kind of message or the perception which the movie sets is not the true image of India

I agree that ours is a country which deals with Slums and Poverty but the way it is depicted in the Movie is a disgrace to our nation.

Divya Wadhawan said...

Ha ha i find it funny that some people are actually writing that they liked slumdog millionaire..Shame.They must not be Indians.

Chetan said...

It portrays India and Indians in a really bad manner. Totally it’s a crappy movie and every Indian who feels for his country should oppose it for the way we and our people are projected in it.

As Amitabh said all cities have darker side, it does not mean we pile them together in a dark corner and shoot in night to appear even darker.

Show some dignity towards your people, be patriotic. Dump the movie and its makers.

But as Indians we must not let them take over us again and we should not encourage these kind of movies that critises our nation.

Indians who are praising the film should be shot. We do not need this kind of "world citizens" here.

Mahesh said...

I dont know how any self respecting intelligent Indian can appreciate such a perverted depiction of India. In my opinion this movie should be banned in India.

Manjunath said...

While there is a section of Indians , who work towards gaining respect for this Country , there are others who do not hesitate to exploit their own , for monetary gains.

Vin said...

Heh, you people who applaud this film need some more education.

Sanjay said...

There is no excuse for not being able to recognise an insult and instead pretend that it is actually a compliment. Such dumb-asses deserve no better than mockery by the whole world.

This movie should be treated as a terror attack towards India, since it will have major impact on Indian tourism, Indian BPO business and image of India.
When “The Passion of the Christ”, we saw a massive protest all over the country. When a carton was published in Denmark, we saw similar protest in this country. MF Hussein painting created anger waves. But, when a crime like this happens, I don’t see anyone moving a single finger!!!

This is 'India Selling' phenomenon....n not 'India shining'.
We r the proud Indians hoping to get an Oscar..cos India sells well outside.

As far as the film is concerned it is a bullshit. Some fools have heaped laurels and bigger fools are in the queue. So its a chain reaction.

Where are our intellectuals gone? We have no national pride. Any firangi can come here and loot us and depict India in a shameless manner.

It's a wake up call for all those Indians... who have welcomed "Slumdog Millionaire" as a good movie... to be ready to face the negative vibes of the movie...practically!!!...Be ready to face the national crisis, where you are giving a chance to people recognize you as a immigrant from slums!!!

Karan said...

Showing the negative side of a country and enjoying it..people seems to be shameless these days..i request to let not indulge in this as i feel fighting for nothing and making world watch.. shows what unity we have is again a shameless thing.

criticism should be taken in a positive way i personally feel...

In all i must say... movie doesn't show goodies about India and i am totally with you that it is a bad movie and one should not watch (atleast we Indians) to tell the world we will not tolerate if anybody tries to play with our emotions...

Is Slumdog Millionaire really a pride for Indians?

Very often people say that India is my country, I am an Indian or I am proud to be an Indian. But is it really so? Do we really associate ourselves with India, as we associate ourselves with our family?

When we say ‘my country’ - is the word ‘my’ referred here with the same intensity as in ‘my family’? Do we really want name, fame and recognition worldwide on the cost of our family’s poor image? If not, then why are we so happy on getting name, fame and recognition worldwide through Slumdog Millionaire(SM)? Is it not on the cost of our countries poor image? We generally have so many dark phases of our personality or family life, but do we really want to show them to others? Doesn’t Slumdog Millionaire show the dark side of our country which we really don’t want to expose to others? But aren’t we using double standards by trying to conceal the dark phases of our family but appreciating the exposure of the same of our country in SM? This shows that how much we are in fact related to our country, our INDIA.

Those people, who don’t favor Slumdog Millionaire, are referred by others as ‘Pseudo patriotic’. But who is the authority to decide that is it patriotic or ‘Pseudo patriotic’? Today these people are adding the word pseudo for the patriots who didn’t follow their ideas. Tomorrow they might call the same to those patriots who have gifted us an Independent India to breathe in. Actually they are calling patriots as pseudo patriots, just because of their own views. But you know, one who has true feeling for his country never cares for these false titles (After all it is associated with patriotism).

Wake up everyone! Let’s show others that we can come together for our nation’s pride, no matter if our personal view differs from others. View of different people may vary but if someone raises an issue that brings down the dignity of the country, can’t we favor him, just in the name of our country? If we can’t stand besides or walk hand in hand, at least we should not pull his leg for his true feelings. Remember that we got this independence just because our people respected and supported each other’s feelings in the name of our country. Can’t we consider our country as a big family!

Every society has some drawbacks and we too are not exception but showing it to others (foreign people) will definitely bring some favorable change. Is it so? Just think twice.

Actually nobody is going to help us; we ourselves have to come forward to remove this, which is not really a one time job. It needs efforts of all citizens of India, irrespective of the class and creed. Let’s come forward and join hands to save our country so that no other Danny Boyle should dare to portray India in poor light.
